Lee Byung Hun’s Masquerade was finally unveiled through the screening held on September 3. The film was originally thought to be a heavy traditional piece, but it actually turned out to be an unexpectedly comical and entertaining one, and is fitting for the Chuseok season, in which many families flock to the theaters.

The film exceeded expectations with its big laughs. Lee Byung Hun left behind his seriousness as a world star, and became his role Ha Sun for a new transformation.

Lee Byung Hun as Ha Sun danced in the streets, while at times he put on some slapstick comedy by bumping his head on some rafters. The scenes where Ha Sun plots mutiny against Heo Gyun (Ryu Seung Ryong) also draw some laughter.

The Queen Han Hyo Joo and Kim In Kwon also put on some serious acting, but they manage to make it more comical than truly serious.

The film became lighter with the actors’ comedic antics and the situations they were set in.

Despite its fluffiness, Masquerade still keeps its hold on the heavy questions, such as what makes a king a king.

Director Choo Chang Min said after the screening, “As you can see, there’s a lot of comedy in the film. We thought a lot about how we would be able to make it entertaining without making it too immature.”

Lee Byung Hun said, “Ryu Seung Ryong put on some funny acting for the film, but the director must’ve thought it was too immature; they were all edited out. It was so much fun because Ha Sun was like me. He’s a lovely character. I felt gratified.”

“I had a hard time because I wanted to burst out laughing in the scenes where I had to put on fake smiles,” Han Hyo Joo said.

Masquerade is a film about what happens when a low-class man Ha Sun is set on the throne as a replacement for the king. It premieres on September 19.
