Architecture 101 has been the talk of the town among film professionals for a while, and on March 13, it was finally unveiled in front of a larger group through its press preview.
The film is director Lee Yong Joo’s second full-length film after he was recognized for his participation in Memories of Murder and Possessed, and the fact that Chungmuro’s new blue chip Lee Je Hoon appears in it was enough to draw great expectations even before the film’s official preview. The revealed film showed a consistent theme of architecture running through it, as implied by the title.
Director Lee Yong Joo has a bachelor’s degree in architecture from Yonsei University. As such, his scenario boasts an expert architectural theme. The architecture major Seung Min (Lee Je Hoon) first meets his first love Seo Yun (Suzy) in an Architecture 101 class.
But their love never comes to fruition, and is only revived when Seo Yun (Han Ga In) goes to see Seung Min (Uhm Tae Woong) 15 years later. Seo Yun asks Seung Min to build her a house in her hometown, allowing the two meet again as an architect and house owner, giving them ample opportunity to rekindle their love for each other.

As the film’s story progresses, so does the construction of the home the two build together. The home is indeed a sight to see, as it is built right next to a beach which can be seen through the house’s large windows. The completion of the house through a reconstruction of one that was already there seems to fit the theme of the film which brings the past and the present together.
The film mostly takes place in architecture-related locations and an architectural design office, meaning that many bits of architectural jargon make it into the film. It’s fairly impressive that the film is a romance, but takes place in a professional setting.
Although the director has a background in architecture, he asked for advice from Gu Seung Hwe, the head of an architectural office. The collaboration helped the film contain more detail about architecture.
Even the film’s background music has something to do with architecture. The main theme song for the film is Etude of Memories, a song that was written by Kim Dong Ryul when he was a member of the group Exhibition. Kim Dong Ryul also majored in architecture at Yonsei University, making him a junior of director Lee Yong Joo.
When asked about his personal ties with Kim Dong Ryul, the director said, “I never met him [at school] because I’m much older than him. I didn’t choose this song as the film’s OST on purpose,” but the audience has already figured out the connection the music has with the film.
The film will premiere on March 22.
